What do 190T and 210T mean?
They are commercial count labels used for woven fabric. Count is related to the number of warp ends and filling picks in a measured area, but an RFQ should not assume that every mill or supplier calculates the trade label identically. Ask for the reported construction, such as separate warp and weft figures, and identify the method used.
ASTM D3775 appears in the official ASTM textile standards catalogue as the method for end (warp) and pick (filling) count. The same catalogue lists different methods for mass per unit area, tearing strength and breaking strength. That separation is the clearest reason a 210T label cannot stand in for a complete fabric specification.

Why a higher T number can still disappoint
A higher nominal count can be combined with finer yarn, a different weight, weaker tear behavior or an unsuitable coating. It may also create a different hand feel and folding bulk. Conversely, a lower-count construction with appropriate yarn and finishing can be the better fit for a promotional umbrella whose priorities are weight, price and reliable printing.
Fabric performance also changes after dyeing, printing and coating. Test the supplied finished fabric in the target color and finish. Do not accept a report for a different color, coating or lot without understanding whether it is representative.
Which tests matter beyond thread count?
- Mass per unit area: confirms how much fabric is present, reported in g/m².
- Breaking force and elongation: ISO 13934-1 describes a strip method for mainly woven textile fabrics.
- Tear strength: important because canopy damage often starts at a cut, seam, tip or abrasion point.
- Surface wetting: useful for water beading, but it is not the same as resisting water penetration.
- Hydrostatic resistance: ISO 811 measures resistance to water penetration under pressure.
- Color and finish: include shade, colorfastness, coating adhesion, blocking and odor where relevant.
- Finished-product checks: inspect seams, panel tension, leakage paths, folding, opening and appearance after cycling.
Which projects may choose 190T?
190T may be suitable for cost-controlled promotional, retail or basic rain umbrellas when the selected yarn, mass, finish and frame meet the approved sample. The reason to choose it should be a balanced specification, not the assumption that it is always “cheap fabric.”

Which projects may choose 210T?
210T may be requested when a buyer wants a denser construction, refined hand, tighter appearance or a particular premium specification. It can be useful for branded folding umbrellas and other products where canopy presentation matters. Yet the final benefit must be demonstrated in the approved build.
